Neither of my parents have started companies. I went to college and graduate school in their entirety without dropping out. I’m risk-averse. I don’t have a lot of money (nor access to much). And yet - I am an entrepreneur. The truth is, the majority of entrepreneurs are more similar to me than to their opposite. Society and media have chosen a few outliers to these standards and made them so much larger than life, that it has now clouded our vision of who can be an entrepreneur and what an entrepreneur should be. So let’s have a look at some of this “common knowledge” that is nothing more than myth:
In summary:
There is not one mold of an entrepreneur. They don’t need to be the best at every aspect of a company. They tend to be educated. They are resourceful about funding the company. And this all means that you, too, can be an entrepreneur, even if you haven’t had your genome coded for “entrepreneurial DNA.”

Fantastic and informative article that offers facts to dispel the prevalent myths regarding entrepreneurship. Learning these entrepreneurial skills in high school--or even middle school!--would be greatly beneficial to individuals as well as their communities.

This is encouraging. I'm not a high school student. I'm a mom of a high school student, and I want him to see that he need NEVER be counted out; that he can ALWAYS dig deep, reach higher, and push further. De-mythifying the profile of an entrepreneur is greatly appreciated!

I enjoyed the article immensely, particularly the stats. American they may be but I think they're pretty appropriate to Australia where reportedly 50% of startups fail in the first 2 years. One reason not so evident in the US is that our banks do not lend on balance sheets or business plans; they will only lend to small businesses when they can get a first mortgage over real property - residential, rather than commercial or industrial usually.

This is great info, but does not seem to address starting up a retail location that caters to a specific market. Also, I can start my business up with less than $10k, but what about living expenses and other unexpected expenses. It sounds like a big risk unless you take out a loan 3 times the size of the amount needed just so you can pay on that loan while the business picks up steam.

While every word you've put is true, there can be one more added to the list ... Most of the aspiring entrepreneurs always have a doubt that when they start interviewing, surveying or start pitching others will steal their ideas. While they can definitely be inspired and take a shot at the expected user outcomes, they are never able to match your value system and the knowledge of How.

I do believe in the section, that funding should be coming later in the cycle. You must have a competitive start-up, product, and/or service and have a sought after value for the customer.
